Why Is the Nandigram Bypoll Being Held?

The Nandigram Assembly seat became vacant after Suvendu Adhikari resigned from the constituency. The ECI subsequently included Nandigram among the Assembly constituencies scheduled for by-elections in October. The official notification identifies the vacancy as having resulted from Adhikari’s resignation.

Adhikari had won both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election and subsequently retained Bhabanipur, leading to the vacancy in Nandigram.

The BJP has fielded Hasirani Rath from Nandigram. Rath is the mother of Chandranath Rath, an aide of Suvendu Adhikari who was killed in May 2026. The BJP announced her candidature ahead of the October bypoll.
