SpaceX completes $60bn acquisition of Cursor as AI ambitions expand

SpaceX has completed its acquisition of Cursor, bringing the popular AI coding platform into the company’s growing artificial intelligence operation and putting the software’s developers to work on Grok and other AI products.

SpaceX has officially completed its acquisition of Cursor, the AI-powered coding platform, in a deal valued at $60bn (£45.5bn).

Cursor announced the completion on Friday, saying it would join the SpaceXAI team and work on a range of products including Grok, Grok Build, Grok Bot, Grok API and Cursor.

The announcement was made through Cursor’s official X account, which said: “Cursor is now part of SpaceX” and confirmed that the acquisition had officially closed.

The transaction makes Cursor one of the largest technology acquisitions in the AI sector and gives SpaceX access to one of the industry’s best-known AI coding products.

From AI coding assistant to SpaceX’s wider AI strategy

Cursor is developed by Anysphere and has grown rapidly by using artificial intelligence to help software developers write, understand, debug and modify code.

The acquisition was announced in June as an all-stock transaction valued at about $60bn. Reuters reported at the time that SpaceX was buying Anysphere to strengthen its position in the rapidly expanding enterprise AI software market.

The deal has now formally closed, with Anysphere becoming part of SpaceX.

The acquisition is particularly significant because SpaceX’s ambitions have increasingly moved beyond rockets, satellites and Starlink. The company is now building a much larger AI business around Grok, computing infrastructure and AI software.

Cursor team to help build Grok

Cursor’s announcement suggests the company’s technology and team will have a direct role in the next phase of Grok’s development.

The company said its team would help “make Grok the world’s most useful AI” while improving Grok Build, Grok Bot, Grok API and Cursor.
