By A Staff Reporter, Kathmandu, Oct. 7: Speaker Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal has drawn global leaders' attention to the fact that only if the mountains are secure can human civilization, water resources, biodiversity, and our collective future be safeguarded.
Mentioning that Nepal contributes less than 0.1 per cent to global greenhouse gas emissions, he said the country is disproportionately bearing the brunt of global climate change impacts.
Addressing the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Speaker Aryal emphasized that the disaster caused by the Himalayan tsunami is not merely the story of a single river or country, it is a challenge and a warning to the entire world.
“Even as we repeatedly raise the issue of climate change on the global stage, on August 26, we were once again forced to confront an unimaginable climate-induced disaster. We suffered immense loss of life and infrastructure due to the catastrophic floods, often described as a Himalayan tsunami,” Speaker Aryal said.
He also urged IPU delegates to play a leading role in strengthening parliamentary solidarity with nations at risk from climate change and those affected by disasters.
