US Stock Market Today: Wall Street was mixed but largely higher on Monday, October 5, with the Nasdaq Composite hitting a record high as major technology and growth stocks advanced. The S&P 500 also moved higher, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged lower. Reuters reported the Nasdaq up 0.77%, with Nvidia, Meta Platforms, Microsoft and Tesla among the major stocks supporting the technology-led rally.

The market advance came as investors continued to assess the outlook for Federal Reserve interest rates, Treasury yields, oil prices, corporate earnings and economic growth. At the same time, elevated bond yields and geopolitical risks continued to limit broader risk appetite.

The S&P 500 gained about 0.50%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.06%, making the overall market picture mixed rather than a broad-based advance across all three major indexes. Reuters said 10 of the S&P 500’s 11 sectors were trading higher, with real estate the only lagging sector.

Why Is US Stock Market Up Today?

One of the main reasons behind Monday’s gains was continued strength in megacap technology and growth stocks.

Nvidia shares rose about 1.2%, remaining close to their recent record. Meta Platforms, Microsoft and Tesla gained between approximately 1.6% and 2.4%, according to Reuters. The S&P 500 software and services sector was also up around 1.2%.

The strength in technology stocks helped offset concerns about elevated borrowing costs and Treasury yields, allowing the Nasdaq to reach another record level.

Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta and Tesla Stocks in Focus

Technology stocks remained central to Monday’s market move. Nvidia continued to benefit from investor optimism surrounding artificial intelligence, while gains in Meta, Microsoft and Tesla provided additional support to the Nasdaq.

Reuters quoted Dennis Dick, founder and market structure analyst at Triple D Trading, as saying the AI and technology story remained strong enough to withstand the pressure from higher interest rates.

However, not every technology-related group advanced. Semiconductor stocks were slightly weaker, highlighting the uneven nature of the technology rally.

S&P 500 Today: Most Sectors Trade Higher

The S&P 500 was also supported by broad sector participation. Reuters reported that 10 of the 11 S&P 500 sectors were trading higher during Monday’s session.
