Sankhuwasabha, a district in the eastern region of Nepal, is famous for its high biodiversity and beautiful scenery, extending from an elevation of around 300 metres above the sea level in the Arun Valley to 8,463 metres in Mt Makalu, which is the world’s fifth highest peak. It is popularly known as “rhododendron capital,” with 28 varieties of the flower.
Occupying an area of 3,468.17 sq km, Sankhuwasabha comprises several landscapes, including forests, agricultural land, hills, snowy regions, water bodies and rocky regions. The Makalu-Barun National Park and Conservation Area, which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, provides protection to several ecosystems from tropical forest ecosystems to alpine grassland ecosystems.
One of the less famous animals in the district is the golden stag beetle (Odontolabis cuvera), which is also known as Sunaulo Singe Khapate or Gobare Kira. Some farmers in the district have observed the beetle in piles of animal droppings as well as in dried wood. This insect is especially active in warm and humid weather conditions; thus, the summer season and the monsoon season can be considered ideal for watching this insect.
