Christa Pike health update: Death row inmate Christa Pike remains in critical condition after a failed execution attempt in Tennessee, with her attorneys saying she remains unconscious and on a ventilator while receiving medical treatment.

Pike, 50, survived an attempted lethal injection at Tennessee’s Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on Wednesday, September 30, after two doses of pentobarbital were administered. She was later taken to a hospital for emergency medical care.

Her legal team described her as “critically ill” and said she was receiving medical care for the effects of the execution attempt. They also asked the public and media to respect Pike’s privacy while her condition remains serious. The Guardian reported that Pike remained unconscious and on a machine helping her breathe as of Friday, based on information provided by her attorneys. Her lawyers said they did not have a clear prognosis at that stage.

What Happened During Christa Pike’s Failed Execution?

Pike was administered two doses of pentobarbital during the September 30 execution attempt. Witnesses reported that she continued breathing after the injections, prompting the procedure to be halted and Pike to be taken to hospital.

In a court filing, Pike’s attorneys said they believed problems with the intravenous lines may have prevented the drug from properly entering her bloodstream. They alleged that the execution team did not recognize that the IV lines were incorrectly placed or that veins had “blown” before another set of syringes was prepared and administered.
