By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Oct. 6: A new bird species has been recorded in Nepal. The Collared Kingfisher was recorded in farmland areas of Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City-12 in Dhanusha district, at an altitude of 75 metres above sea level. The bird was observed perched on electric wires and trees around the farmland.
According to a press statement issued by the Nepalese Ornithological Union (NOU), Anil Mandal observed the bird for the first time in Nepal during a birdwatching session near Kuwa Mangalaiya Phatak, including the areas around the Phatak, Chauri Pokhari and Bijayhood Garden. He photographed the bird at around 5:30 pm on September 29, 2026.
After making an initial identification of the bird, Mandal sent its photographs and details to the Nepal Bird Record Committee (NBRC) on September 30, 2026, for confirmation. The committee studied the details received, sought opinions and suggestions from national and international ornithologists, and reached the conclusion that the bird was a new record for Nepal, the statement said.
