US President Donald Trump has asked the Pentagon to prepare for the possibility of renewed military action against Iran, according to a report by Axios citing US officials. The directive does not mean that Trump has decided to launch another offensive, and no date has been fixed for any potential strikes.
The preparations come as negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain stuck, with US officials assessing both diplomatic and military options.
Why is the US preparing for possible strikes on Iran?
According to Axios, US Central Command (CENTCOM) was instructed several days ago to complete preparations for a possible return to major combat operations in Iran. Potential targets could include Iranian energy infrastructure, military assets and nuclear facilities, the report said.
