American computer scientist Margaret Hamilton has unfortunately passed away at 90. Hamilton was a trailblazer who worked on the software development for NASA’s historic Apollo 11 programme. News of her death was shared by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) via an obituary.

Margaret Elaine Hamilton was an American computer scientist, mathematician and software engineer. She was best known for directing the team that created the onboard flight software used in NASA’s Apollo missions.
Hamilton was credited for helping to formally establish software engineering as a discipline. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced her death in an obituary and described her as a “profoundly influential computer scientist”. Apart from her work with NASA, she authored over 130 publications.

Once she had graduated, she spent a short time teaching both mathematics and French. In 1959, she relocated to Massachusetts with her then husband James Cox Hamilton and started working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
